Abstract algebra is, in some sense, the birthplace of words. Indeed, basic algebraic objects, such as free groups for example, are defined explicitly using words. This has motivated, as we shall
If you’re lucky enough to bump into a mathematician then you might get something along the lines of: “Algebra is the abstract encapsulation of our intuition for composition”. By composition, we mean the concept of two object coming together to form a new one. For example adding two numbers, or composing real valued single variable functions.

In abstract algebra, the inverse of an element a is usually written a-1. This is why (GL,n) and (SL, n) do not include singular matrices; only nonsingular matrices have inverses. In Zn, the modular integers, the group operation is understood to be addition, because if n is not prime, multiplicative inverses do not exist, or are not unique. INTRODUCTION: In Algebra, a broad division of Mathematics, Abstract Algebra is the study of Algebraic Structures which includes Groups, Rings, Fields,Vector Spaces etc. This is one of the basic pillars of Modern Mathematics and is also referred to as Modern Algebra. Because of its generality, abstract algebra is used in many fields of science.

The contents cover groups, rings, and fields as well as some history and additional related topics (such as a brief introduction to number theory). Abstract Algebra, his undergraduate text, is much friendlier. I’d never choose it myself, but unlike the graduate text, it’s entirely usable. (I know why Tom chose the rings-first approach $-$ we argued about it more than once $-$ and there’s a reasonable case to be made for it, but I still don’t care for it.) $\endgroup$ – Brian M. Scott Nov 18 '12 at 17:04 Unusually for an abstract algebra text, five chapters on linear algebra are also included, making the text a self-contained introduction to undergraduate algebra.

A good way to introduce this lesson is to play “What’s my rule?” (See teachers’ notes for Chapter 2, 2013-08-16 Abstract Algebra is an ideal capstone course for math ed majors and for those who will go on to grad school in math. Throughout the course they review things like 1-1 functions, onto functions (surprisingly few senior math ed majors understand these ideas well); This was the specified coursework book for my abstract algebra course in college. Very simple to read and understand, it helps considerably in making the topic approachable even for those without a very strongly developed mathematical maturity. Covers group theory in very good detail. MATH 251: ABSTRACT ALGEBRA I REVIEW, EXAM #3 Problem 1. Prove that if R is an integral domain and x2 = 1 for some x ∈ R then x = ±1. Problem 2.
